“'The universe looking at itself through a tiny mirror' is a solo album that I developed between 2021 and 2023. I believe it tells a personal story, but as one possible example of human experience, it can also be read as a singular window into something much more universal.
Listen to the bell, how it falls and falls, confronting us with our fear of groundless vastness, but revealing hidden abstract melodies of beauty. Listen to all notes of a saxophone, unfolding the pure physical reality of the instrument. It’s not much, but as dense as it can be. What else is there to play? Listen to the empty room. An afternoon in some kitchen, the TV in the background. Everyday. It’s not nothing – but nothing special. What else is there to be? A dream unfolds, in which time overlaps and identities surrender. Orlando lived for 400 years. The universe does not know what it is, and yet it exists.” (Tobias Meier, June 2023)

The four-part album 'The universe looking at itself through a tiny mirror' (WER067) is the second solo release by Zurich-based musician and artist Tobias Meier (*1984) on Wide Ear Records after 'Interesting' (WER019). In his artistic practice, he researches condensation points and singularities where something emerges. Thereby he pursues a congruence between musical material, process of creation and content.
Tobias Meier was an active part of the Swiss jazz scene as a saxophonist for many years starting in 2005. After intensive involvement with free improvised experimental music and numerous releases and tours in the USA and the EU, his interest turned away from instrumental and compositional craft towards a conceptual engagement with the world. His current works in the form of solo performances, installations, texts, collaborations, or compositions for other artists make use of various media and often have a collage-like character.

"Das Solo-Album 'The universe looking at itself through a tiny mirror' entstand zwischen 2021 und 2023. Es erzählt eine persönliche Geschichte, welche als ein mögliches Beispiel menschlicher Erfahrung, als ein singuläres Fenster in etwas Universelleres gelesen werden.
Da ist eine Glocke, die fällt und fällt und einem konfrontiert mit der Angst vor dem Bodenlosen, und gleichzeitig verborgene und abstrakte Melodien von Schönheit offenbart. Da sind alle Töne eines Saxophons, die die reine physische Realität des Instruments entfalten. Es ist nicht viel, aber so dicht, wie es nur sein kann. Was gibt es sonst noch zu spielen? Da ist ein leerer Raum. Ein Nachmittag in irgendeiner Küche, der Fernseher im Hintergrund. Alltäglich. Es ist nicht nichts - aber auch nichts Besonderes. Was gibt es da noch zu sein? Ein Traum entfaltet sich, in dem sich die Zeit überschneidet und die Identitäten sich aufgeben. Orlando lebte 400 Jahre lang. Das Universum weiß nicht, was es ist, und doch existiert es." Das vierteilige Album "The universe looking at itself through a tiny mirror" (WER067) ist nach "Interesting" (WER019) die zweite Solo-Veröffentlichung des Musikers und Künstlers Tobias Meier (*1984) auf Wide Ear Records. In seiner künstlerischen Praxis erforscht er Kondensationspunkte und Singularitäten, an denen etwas entsteht. Dabei strebt er eine Kongruenz zwischen musikalischem Material, Entstehungsprozess und Inhalt an.
Tobias Meier war ab 2005 während vieler Jahre als Saxophonist in der Schweizer Jazzszene aktiv. Nach intensiver Beschäftigung mit frei improvisierter experimenteller Musik und zahlreichen Veröffentlichungen und Tourneen in den USA und der EU wandte sich sein Interesse weg vom instrumentalen und kompositorischen Handwerk hin zu einer konzeptionellen Auseinandersetzung mit der Welt. Seine aktuellen Arbeiten in Form von Solo-Performances, Installationen, Texten, Kollaborationen oder Kompositionen für andere Künstler bedienen sich verschiedener Medien und haben oft einen collageartigen Charakter.
